Poll: Texas Ranks High In Uninsured, Once Again

Everything is bigger in Texas, including the number of uninsured residents.
New shows 27.2 percent of Texans reported being uninsured in the first half of 2011 鈥� the highest percentage of any state in the U.S. 聽But that鈥檚 nothing new for the Lone Star State, which has had this distinction since Gallup and Healthways first began tracking uninsured rates in 2008.
The U.S. Census Bureau聽will release its own data for uninsured rates from 2010 on . 聽The Census Bureau鈥檚 2009 Current Population Survey (CPS) reported 26.1 percent of Texans as being uninsured.
Gallup and Healthways conducted telephone interviews with 177,237 people across the country between Jan.聽1 and June 30 of this year as part of their . 聽The Well-Being Index looks at six 鈥榮ub-indexes鈥� (life evaluation, physical health, emotional health, healthy behavior, work environment and basic access) to assess the overall health of residents of the U.S. and the U.K.
The survey’s timing is interesting, coming just one day before the scheduled among GOP presidential candidates. Why?聽Current front-runner Gov. Rick Perry is聽expected to go after former-front runner Mitt Romney on Masschusetts’ health care law. 聽That law is credited with the state’s in the聽Gallup poll as聽having the lowest聽percentage of uninsured in the nation (5.3 percent).
The survey鈥檚 six-month sample had a margin of error of 卤0.2 percentage points, but Healthways reported a drop in overall health coverage in the month of ,聽leaving 82 percent of Americans insured.
